If you’re saying things like:
“I am stuck in this way of thinking.”
“I don’t even know what matters to me anymore.”
“I’m avoiding everything - the things I need to, the things I’m supposed to do, and even the things I used to want to do.”
Then Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) could be a good fit for you!
What is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an approach to counseling that helps people to open up, be present, and take meaningful action in their lives. Acceptance is about making space for our experiences, and commitment is about taking action that is rooted in our values. If you find yourself trying so hard to avoid depression, anxiety, anger, grief, or any other experience, ACT is for you. If you have no idea what your values even are, ACT is for you.
In ACT, there are six ways that we suffer.
Fusion (“I’m stuck in this story about what happened to me.”)
Experiential Avoidance (“I need to get rid of my thoughts, feelings, urges, and sensations.”)
Inflexible Attention (“I can’t focus on what I want or what I’m supposed to be doing.”)
Remoteness from Values (“I’m acting the opposite of who I want to be.”)
Unworkable Action (“What I’m doing is not getting me closer to my goals.”)
Fusion with Self-Concept (“I am an anxious mess.”)
